Cooling Towers are a cost-effective way to remove excess heat from air conditioning systems and industrial processes. They also help to make large commercial buildings more comfortable and to improve the quality of air for breathing. However, they can also introduce bacteria and other opportunistic pathogens that can cause disease.

Towers typically use water from a source such as a river, lake, well, or surface water supply. This water is pumped through the cooling tower system to evaporatively cool the air passing through the tower. The cooled water is then recirculated into the basin at the base of the tower where it can be used to extract more process or building heat from the air.

In closed circuit systems, the return fluid circulates through a coil in the tower structure. Compared to open towers, closed-circuit Cooling Towers are more efficient as they can extract more energy from the circulating water.

A cooling tower must be designed with a high capacity to capture the maximum amount of energy from the circulating water. A proper distribution deck is essential to achieve this by evenly distributing the recirculating water over the top of the cooling tower structure. This ensures that the recirculating water will have an adequate surface area to transfer heat to the air. Broken nozzles or plugged orifices can impede this process, negatively impacting the overall heat exchange capacity of the system.

Water loss is the result of a variety of factors including evaporation, drift loss, leaks, blow-out, and blow-down. Equipment manufacturers have included a variety of control devices to minimize these losses such as drift eliminators that reduce drift loss by between 0.05 and 0.2 %.

If a cooling tower leaks or is damaged, it can cause a significant loss of water from the system. The leaking water can cause damage to surrounding equipment, and the resulting overflow can potentially lead to flooding.

This includes providing a list of opportunistic bacterial pathogens commonly detected in Cooling Towers, as well as a list of best practices for preventing opportunistic bacteria from entering water bodies or damaging fish and wildlife.
