Avascular Necrosis is a condition in which the blood supply to a bone is cut off, leading to small breaks that eventually cause the bone to collapse. This condition is also called osteonecrosis. It can happen in any bone but occurs more often in the ends of long bones such as the hips.

People who have avascular necrosis usually have a history of a fracture, dislocation or other injury to the bone, or they may take medications that stop the body from getting enough blood to a bone. Medications used to treat sickle cell disease, diabetes, lupus, Gaucher disease and HIV also increase the risk of developing osteonecrosis.

X-rays and imaging tests are used to identify the source of the problem. MRI or CT imaging can show if a fracture has occurred or if there is damage to the tissue inside the bone. Bone scans use radioactive material to find where the blood flow has stopped in a bone. The material is injected into a vein and shows up as bright spots on an X-ray.
