Pumped Hydro Storage is a technology that uses an electrically-powered pump to transfer water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir. The amount of energy stored is dependent on the altitude of the two reservoirs and the depth of the lower reservoir. In pumped-hydro energy storage systems, the round-trip efficiency is about 75%.

Compared to other large-scale storage technologies, PHS is a mature and well-established technology. It provides flexibility for the grid and offers a critical back-up during periods of excess demand. A pumped-storage system can be used to store excess power from wind turbines and solar arrays and can also be used for resolving intermittency in the grid.

While Pumped Hydro Storage has many advantages, it has its drawbacks. These include a high construction cost and lead time, and a negative impact on land and wildlife. There are also major costs involved in operating a pumped-hydro storage system. Besides the initial capital cost, annual operation costs are about 20% of the total cost. After 20 years of operation, the facility will require major refurbishments.

Since a pumped-hydro system is not a reliable source of power, it is not suitable for continuous electricity production. The income of a pumped-hydro storage system is often highly variable. It can be very high during a heat wave or when there is an electricity outage elsewhere in the network.

The Pumped Hydro Storage system is not ideal for long-term storage, as it can provide an emergency backup during periods of peak demand. It can also help resolve intermittency by working with other renewables.

When compared to underground energy storage systems, pumped-hydro ES is relatively inexpensive. However, its usefulness is limited to areas where there are convenient reservoirs. Similarly, it is not useful for areas with large differences in altitude. The overall cost of a pumped-hydro energy storage system is highly sensitive to the discount rate.
