An Intraocular Lens is a type of artificial lens which is surgically implanted inside the eye. It is used to replace the natural lens removed during cataract surgery. Most intraocular lenses are made of plastics such as silicone or acrylic. They are designed to be transparent and to provide a clear vision.

There are three main types of intraocular lenses: monofocal, multifocal and accommodating. Each type of lens provides a different type of focus. A monofocal lens is a single-focused lens which offers one focusing distance. This type of lens is suitable for patients who want to improve their distance vision. On the other hand, a multifocal lens provides multiple focused vision, while an accommodating lens focuses on partial focusing. Both types of lenses can improve near vision, however, only over time.

The first intraocular lenses was implanted in 1949 by British ophthalmologist Sir Harold Ridley. Ridley was a true pioneer and innovator in the field. He recognized the advantages of using artificial lenses for cataract patients. Although his initial idea was rejected by the medical community, he continued to pursue his goal.

The Intraocular Lens Market is anticipated to reach US$ 5,076.1 million in 2022 and grow at a CAGR of 7.2% during the following five years (2022-2030).

Today, there are several different types of IOLs, including the traditional spherical lenses and the aspheric models. While all of these have been proven to be safe, they have their own individual characteristics. Many conventional spherical IOLs are monofocal lenses. These are usually designed to correct astigmatism or to provide clear vision at a single focal point.

The most common type of Intraocular Lens is the three-piece posterior chamber model, which combines a round optic with two plastic haptics. The haptics, which are made of a plastic material, act like tension-loaded springs on the center of the lens. These haptics are suspended by microscopic support ligaments called zonules. In September 2022, SIFI, a global leader in ophthalmic solutions, announced three scientific presentations and launch of its novel lens during the 40th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
