Salicylic Acid belongs to a class of drugs known as salicylates. It can be produced naturally or synthetically. Salicylates are produced naturally from certain plants, while it can be produced synthetically by treating sodium phenolate, at high temperature and high pressure, with carbon dioxide to yield sodium salicylate, which is later acidified using sulfuric acid to yield salicylates. It is produced commercially via the Kolbe-Schmitt process. It is a white solid first isolated from the bark of willow trees (Salix spp.), from which it gets its name.

Fruits such as apples, blueberries, avocados, dates, peaches, kiwi fruit, raspberries, grapes, figs, plums, cherries, strawberries, prunes, and grapefruit contain Salicylic Acid. Vegetables such as alfalfa, mushrooms, broad beans, radishes, eggplant, zucchini, spinach, peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower contain salicylates. Broccoli, cucumber, mushrooms, spinach, radishes, zucchini and cauliflower all contain high amounts of salicylates. Vegetables from the nightshade family, like peppers and eggplant, also contain salicylates. Tomatoes are very high in salicylates.

Tomatoes contain salicylates, a beta hydroxyl acid which works as an effective remedy for treating acnes. Salicylic Acid Market is widely used as a medicine to help remove the outer layer of the skin. As such it is used to treat acne, skin tags, warts, calluses, dandruff, psoriasis, ichthyosis, and ringworm. For conditions other than warts, it is often used together with other medications. It is also used to manufacture aspirin and other personal care products. The acid is responsible for the anti-inflammatory action of aspirin.

Salicylic Acid topical is used to treat many skin disorders, depending on the dosage form and strength of the preparation. It is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved skin care ingredient used for the topical treatment of acne. Salicylates is best known for its ability to deeply clean excess oil out of pores and reduce oil production moving forward, making it a great option for oily skin.
