Halal refers to food that is permissible in Islam, as described in the Koran. Halal meat has to be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter and all blood must be drained from the carcass. To be halal, the meat must be killed in a manner that demonstrates the devotion of a Muslim. The slaughter process may involve stunning the animals, but this is not permitted.

Halal Food is completely safe for human consumption and must contain no haram ingredients. Moreover, halal food does not contain any toxins, intoxicants, or other harmful ingredients. As per Islamic law, halal meat must be harvested in the name of God, reciting the words bismillah before killing an animal. Furthermore, the animals must be treated humanely before slaughter, and should not be kept in an uncomfortable position. Finally, if the meat is not labeled halal, it is haram, and therefore not acceptable for consumption. Therefore, it is important to choose halal meats from the market.

For many people, halal meat may be difficult to find or very expensive. However, there are ways to increase the availability of halal meat. To further increase the spread of halal meat, different parts of the Halal Food Market are coming up with innovative methods to distribute free meals. For example, one Muslim organization, Muslims Giving Back, aims to provide halal meat to those in need. Many people are charitable during Ramadan, when Muslims pay their obligatory zakat almsgiving.

The extent of knowledge and awareness of halal slaughter methods varies from one person to another. Higher education levels were linked with higher attitudes towards Halal Food. In Malaysia, those with higher levels of education were more likely to understand halal slaughter. Similarly, those with higher levels of education believed it was important to provide halal options in society. This supports the notion that people with higher education levels are more accepting of diversity and immigration. In March 2022, Lazada Singapore created a new Halal category for Muslim businesses so that they can tap on newly introduced Halal Channel category of the platform on RedMart featuring halal food for Muslim community in Singapore.
